Mom, are Christians Nazis?

hitler leaving churchSeemingly ever since President George W. Bush took office back in 2001, the word Nazi became disturbingly cool. Most every political and social group bantered around the term with ferocity. They had good reason. If you can convince people that your opponent’s position is nothing more than a dirty, old member of the Nazi platform, you can quickly take the moral high ground. From there, you can begin convincing people that your position is right. Who wants to side with Hitler?

Not too surprisingly, many supporters of homosexual marriage have begun to claim that conservative Christians are nothing more than modern day Nazis. Viewing the church to be a place of religious indoctrination and societal intolerance, many in the LGBT community think a direct link exists between Hitler and conservative pulpits. Hitler murder millions of people in the name of Christ. The church today alienates and maligns thousands of innocent people by holding to the values of 1950 Christendom. The homosexual community want Christians to abandon the irrational hate of the 20th Century and embrace the love of God.

So are those trying to redefine marriage correct? Are conservative, Bible believing Christians nothing more than modern day Nazis? Let’s take a look.

Nazi View of the Bible

In one sense, Hitler did make use of the church. Unlike the American church, the German protestant church was funded by German tax dollars. Being a pragmatic man, Hitler used all government
agencies including the German church to advance Nazism. But before Christianity could become a truly useful member of the Naziparty, Hitler had to divorce it from the Bible. He had to remake the religion into an agency the promoted the German Volk instead of Jesus.

Viewing the Bible to be overtly Jewish and an excessively feminine work, Hitler encouraged the church to abandon the traditional, literal view of the Bible. His Nazi theologians claimed that:

The Devil values the printed page and stretches it out to demand signatures, while God reaches out his hand. Whereas the Jews were the first to write out their faith, Jesus never did so.

The Nazi knew that the written words of the scripturehitler and cardinal hurt their cause and had to be jettisoned. In place of the Bible, the Nazis worshiped the intentions of Jesus and the state. “Down with Paul and the Old Testament,” they chanted. (Evidently, Jesus was Jew hating Aryan.) Driven by nationalistic furor, the Nazis began chopping apart the Bible. They removed all references to sin, the supernatural, and Judaism. (Yes, the Nazi Bible was a pretty small book.) Such things were deemed to be Jewish perversions and unloving doctrines weakness. Hitler and his followers wanted
a nationalistic Christianity free from the dogma and the doctrine of the biblical text.

At the end of the day, Hitler vehemently opposed biblical, conservative Christianity. (He also had little patience for the Nazi church, deeming it unwieldy and petty.)  As early as 1933, the Nazi party began prohibiting soldiers and statesmen from being involved in church life. By 1939, the superintendent of military chaplains boasted that, “no one understood” confessional Christianity “anymore.” Historic Christianity opposed Hitler’s murderous policies of Nazi superiority. And despite his early propaganda speeches, the dictator knew it.  He wanted to rid Germany of the faith. Historian Doris L. Bergen noted that, “hard-core Nazi leaders…as well as Adolf Hitler himself, considered Nazism and Christianity irreconcilable antagonists.” Nazis were not yesterday’s fundamentalist.

The Conservative Christian View

Unlike the Nazis, conservative Christians champion the Bible’s teachings. Many today think the Bible an irrelevant and an antiquated printed page. But conservative Christians view the Bible to be the living word of God. They cling to passages such as II Timothy 3:16 which states:

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.

Today’s fundamentalist believe that the Bible directly conveys God’s message to humanity.  They are driven by the conviction that Scripture is God’s word and must be obeyed.this is the enemy

Conservative Christians condemn homosexuality not because they hate “brown” people and minorities as the Nazi did. They condemn homosexuality and all sex outside of biblical marriage because such actions as pastor Sam Allberry writes, “Contradict sound doctrine and the gospel.”  Unlike the Nazis, conservative Christians stand with the printed page of God’s word. Though unpopular, they cling to the Jesus of the Bible.  As the Apostle Peter says in John 6:38, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

The Homosexual View

Biblically, the term “homosexual Christian” is an oxymoron. One cannot affirm Christ and value things that Jesus hates. To arrive at the point where homosexuality is an acceptable Christian behavior, one has to reject biblical authority. And this is precisely the tact of homosexual theologians. Timothy Johnson wrote:

I think it important to state clearly that we do, in fact, reject the straightforward commands of Scripture, and appeal instead to another authority when we declare that same-sex unions can be holy and good. And what exactly is that authority? We appeal explicitly to the weight of our own experience and the experience thousands of others have witnessed to, which tells us that to claim our own sexual orientation is in fact to accept the way in which God has created us. By doing so, we explicitly reject as well the premises of the scriptural statements condemning homosexuality

Just like the Nazi church and countless theological liberals before them, homosexuals have abandon the printed page. They look to the human experience for meaning and truth. And, they have no other choice. Commenting on the above quote, David Platt wrote:

If someone wants to advocate for homosexual activity, he or she must maintain that the Bible is irrelevant to modern humanity, inconsistent with our experience, and thus insufficient as a source of truth and guidance for our lives.

Homosexual theologians want a positive, sexualized Christianity free from the dogma and doctrine of the biblical text.

Are We Nazis?

The answer is “No.” Conservative Christianity has always affirmed scripture and has been at odds with Hitler. Take a closer look at the likes of nazi PostDietrich Bonhoeffer and the other members of the Confessing Church and the contrast will become even clearer.

However, I do not believe that homosexual theologians are Nazis. They are not advocating for the death of millions of Jews. The homosexual agenda is not the Nazi agenda. In short, we can safely conclude that neither conservative Christians nor homosexuals represent the rebirth of Nazism.

But homosexual theologians do share an intellectual pragmatism with the Nazi party. Both groups attempted to escape the authority of the written text of scripture. As Dr. Albert Mohler wrote a few months ago:

Once biblical inerrancy is abandoned, there is no brake on theological and moral revisionism. The Bible’s authority becomes relative, and there is no anchor to hold the church to the words of Scripture and 2,000 years of Christian witness.

The results of the Nazi and the homosexual theological experiments have been very different. One encouraged a culture to embrace Aryanism and the Holocaust. The other is leading the west to redefine sex. But, they share a methodology. They both believe the Christian faith can and should be unanchored from the Bible and made into something new.

The quotes are true. Hitler did embrace a form of Christianity. But the similarities between the Christianity of Hitler and the Christianity of modern day conservatives begins and ends with the word, “Christian.” Hitler championed a Christianity divorced from scripture, while conservatives champion the written word. So the answer to the questions is a resounding, “No, we are not Nazis.”

Counter Culture Kids: Obey Your Parents

Obeying your parentsIn his recently released book – Counter Culture, David Platt challenged the church to engage all of culture with the transforming grace of the gospel. He realizes that many of us can easily address one or two issues (say poverty or abortion). But as a Christian, we are called to do more. We are called to embrace all aspects of Christian living (not just the ones that come easily to us.) To be faithful, we have to cling to our gospel boogie boards and paddle against every fallen aspect of the cultural stream. We have to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and daily follow Jesus.

And I believe, we should call our kids to do the same. We should expect our kids’ to live lives radically transformed by the gospel. We should call our kids to counter the culture. And the main way our kids do this is by obeying us (their parents).

In II Timothy 3:1-5, we read that one of the signs of the end times is that people will be “disobedient to their parents.” And it doesn’t take much looking to find disobedient kids all around us. We all know the smart kid at gymnastics, the son who argues with his dad during the baseball game, and the daughter who lies to her mom on her way home from school.  We also don’t have to visit many stores to find a mom frantically screaming as her kid races down the grocery aisle. Disobedient kids are everywhere. counter culture

And, the kids who continually disobey their mom or Dad is not just a little messed up or confused. They are lost and standing in judgement. To love someone in authority, you must obey them. The apostle John also said no one can love God and hate their family. Disobedient kids don’t have an issue with their Dad, they have an issue with their heavenly father. Judgement is not far away.

To be a loving parent, we must call our kids to obey us as we seek to follow Christ. We must call them demonstrate their love for Jesus through their actions in the home. Our kid’s spiritual wellbeing depends on it. Their testimony depends on it.

God is not just interested in whether or not kids fold their clothes or take out the trash. He calls children to obey their parents, because such obedience leads to long fulfilled lives (Eph. 5). God designed parents to teach, disciple and train their kids (Deut. 6). Parents (not pastors) have the greatest opportunity to teach about managing money, about people skills, and about eternal life during the typical day.  And as kids listen to their parents, they acquire the skills needed to excel at life, and they get the knowledge necessary to embrace heavenly obedience.  As expected, God’s plan works. A large majority of Christians embrace Christ as children.

When our kids throw their toy across the room in anger, we can’t excuse their action as cute nor can we ignore it. That little person’s behavior is separating them from Christ. To be a loving parent, we must call our kids to obey us (And of course, we must be obedient to Christ. Hypocritical parenting never helped anyone) and then discipline and restore our kids when they fall short of our commands. As we do this, we point our unredeemed kids to Christ and remind our believing kids to value Christ above all us. Obedience is a big deal.

It’s Time To Stop Planned Parenthood

In an abortion there is always a very serious risk to the health and often to the life of the patient. – Margret Sanger (Women and the New Race)

STOP PPWatching Plan Parenthood (PP) doctors calmly describe the killing and selling of dead babies over a glass of wine has sent chills down America’s spine. And we should be horrified by the content of David Daleiden videos. But, we should also be grateful that these stories have broken. They’ve awoken us to reality. These conversations have reminded America that abortion is the nothing less than the cruel, unadulterated murder of innocent children.

But, It’s Just a Tissue

End of lifeThe CEO of PP, Cecile Richards, spent most of the weekend calling the murdered babies fetuses – a unborn vertebrate. But by selling the organs to research facilities dedicated to helping humans, Richards has admitted that the tissue is actually is human. She and her staff can sell the organs precisely because researchers want to human organs for their experiments. The research firms are not contracting with zoos for monkey livers.

Moreover, a baby’s organs (like an adult’s organs) are only valuable if they come from a living host. Let me explain. For adult organs to be useful, they must be extracted from a body that’s both dead and alive. Although adults are declared “brain dead” before their organs are harvested, their bodies still possess some vitality (often via medical equipment). True death (the cessation of breathing and heart function) comes after the organs are extracted. Babies are no different. For an infant’s organs to be useful, they must be extracted from a living host. (The one major difference between adult and these criminal donations is consent. No baby has an organ donation sticker on her driver’s license) By selling the organs, PP has declared the fetuses to be living, human beings. It’s not a fetus; it’s a baby. Planned Parenthood has all but indicted itself for murder.

It’s Not For Profit:

is it legalTechnically, Richards can truthfully say that her organization does not profit from the selling of human organs. The price extracted for the organs is not being sent to PP shareholders. After all PP is a nonprofit organisation. But the money from the organs is being used to run local PP branches. As you can see from the YOUTUBE videos, the babies’ organs are being sold to cover operational costs. So Richards is technically right, Planned Parenthood isn’t profiting from the selling of dead babies. Such sales just go to paying for things like the electric bill and potentially Richard’s salary (a modest $523,616). And incidentally, any organ sale that goes beyond covering the cost for the removal of the organ is prohibited by federal law. And PP is regularly breaking federal law according to its employees.

But Planned Parenthood Does So Much Good:

Or so goes the claim. According to PP, abortion only counts for 3% of their services (BPNews). While true, the number is misleading. PP only counts the actually abortion procedure as an abortion. The other services the patient receives such as a pap test, or STI while preparing for an abortion are counted separately. We don’t know exactly how many of PP’s services are tied to the abortion industry.

Moreover, it was recently discovered that only 5 of 97 surveyed PP locations offered pregnancy care in addition to abortion services.

baby-784609_1280But, we do know that women who receive abortions are more likely to suffer from depression, alcoholism, and substances abuse (AAPLOG). Some researchers have tried to defend abortion by pointing to the fact that women who have aborted their babies face emotional challenges very similar to those faced by women who lost a child to miscarriage or stillbirth. But little ground is gained with this claim. The studies still reveal that women who undergo an abortion always suffer emotional and sometimes even physical pain. Abortion does not improve a woman’s emotional or physical health.  by killing their babies. PP is knowingly afflicting women with pain and mental anguish. Even the famed founder of PP, Margaret Sanger, recognized the evils of abortion writing, “in an abortion there is always a very serious risk to the health…of the patient.”

We do know that PP directly harms women by killing their babies. How many discussions about family planning does it take to justify all the harm that PP has caused?

The Christian Response:

We need to speak for the unborn. Babies are not tissue or a societal burden. They are people designed by God with intrinsic value and worth. The tiniest, most malformed baby is just as valuable as you or me (and the staff of PP). We were all created in the image of God (Psalm 139:13-16, Jeremiah 1:5; Galatians 1:15; and Luke 1:15)!

For you formed my inward parts;/you knitted me together in my mother’s womb – Psalm 119:13

The two videos released by Center for Medical Progress have reminded the world that babies are valuable. Catching the attention of Dr. Russell Moore, John Piper, and David Platt (to name a few) the center has reinvigorated the abortion debate in a great way (No shootings or bombings). Congress is now investigating PP and presidential candidates are lining up to add defunding PP to their political platform. The church has the attention of America. We have a chance to close PP’s doors. And perhaps, we could even put an end to abortion. If we can keep the atrocities of abortion in the public eye by posting and reposting videos, pictures, and articles, politicians will continue to respond and eventually they may even take action. Today, the church is gaining momentum and PP is retreating. Join my in keeping the dialogue going. And then join me in praying that truth will win. Let’s pray that abortion will finally be ended! May God be merciful to us.
