Thoughts and Reflections on Why The Back 2 School Connection Matters

back-2-school-blog-picThe buzz around the 2017 Back 2 School Connection was louder than a bug zapper on Middle George summer night. The first drove into the FBCE parking lot at 8:40AM. A line happy parents and sleepy kids began weaving around the sidewalks of First Baptist Church Eastman at 9AM. The event did not start for another hour.  When the glass doors to FBCE’s Children’s Ministry Center were swung open at 10AM, more than 300 people began pouring into FBCE.

The stats alone reveal that the 2017 Back 2 School Connection was an amazing success. But the greatest part of the Back 2 School Connection was the event’s ability to foster relationships.

info-graphic-for-back-to-school.jpgBack in 2015, George Smith, former Associate Pastor- Joe Daniel, and I launched the Back 2 School Connection.

Our heart was twofold. First, we know that many hardworking families struggle to provide for their children’s needs. We wanted to bless and encourage the single moms and the couples who are working hard but continual find the bank accounts short.  We also wanted to directly encourage kids and so that would feel at home when the come to FBCE.

But second and most importantly, we launched the event desiring to foster meaningful relationships with people outside the walls and culture of FBCE for the expansion of the gospel. We wanted the Back 2 School Connection to be one of many front doors into our church. We wanted our nieghbors to experience the truth people that FBCE is more than the big, cold, scary building on the corner of Oak and Sixth Street. We want our friends to know to that we are a thriving, living body of men and women dedicated to loving God and loving each other.

I am happy to report that the Back 2 School Connection is proving to be a bridge into the families of Dodge County. Unknown faces that walked though our doors three years ago, our now the familiar.  They are now the faces of children who regularly attend our Wednesday night program. They are now the faces of kids who come to camp with us. They are now the faces children who come to Sunday school. They are the faces of our friends and neighbors.

And they are also the faces of our new neighbors. This year several new families came onto the FBCE’s campus for the first time. They learned that we have a youth group; they learned that we have kids programing on Wednesday night. They learned that there is a church in Eastman that has a heart for them and that wants to share Christ with them.

These relationships are vitally important to FBCE and to the expansion of the kingdom. Many people think evangelism consists of running quickly through a tract, demanding a prayer before running back home to your church as fast as you can. We fear getting deeply involved in people’s lives.  That is not the gospel.

The gospel model by Jesus consists of eating with people; it consists of inviting people into our homes and churches; and, it consists of getting deeply involved in the lives of others. If we hope to reach the world with the gospel, we have to take the time to know our neighbors. And as we fulfill the law of God by loving others, we will have ample opportunity to share the good news of Jesus.

The numbers are great because they point to opportunities for relationships and for kingdom expansion.

I am happy to report that did have some amazing numbers. We served over 300 meals! We handed out 491 backpacks to children in Eastman. And we connected with 227 families. Literally hundreds of families were blessed with the backpack and were introduced to the gospel and to the people of God.

The Back 2 School Connection was an amazing success. I am so thankful for all who help! To God be the Glory!

FBCE Loves Centrikid; You Will Too!

centrikid-blogIf your kids love shaving cream, water balloons, silly dancing, doing cannon balls in the lake, and weekend trips filled with dancing they need to come with FBCE to the 2018 Centrikid Weekend Camp. All the kids and chaperones who risked a bus ride with their children’s pastor this past year loved camp. And for good reason.

IMG_3557Centrikid hums along like a well oil diesel motor; it has more fun games, classes, and activities than all-inclusive party at Chuck Cheese; and, it has a laser focus on the gospel. I love the Centrikid Weekend Camp experience.  I highly recommend it for your kids.

From the moment our kids where greeted by pool-noodle waving staffers until the moment they piled back slowly back onto the bus with autographed T-shirts, the Centrikid staff was all about our kids. They seamlessly processed all of FBCE’s paper work. The Centrikid team took time to talk with and play with all the kids. They were also quick to answer adult questions: “When is lights out?” And when six of our campers felt threatened by an anonymous white guy, the camp director, Meg Brown, and the Camp Pastor, David Pearson, responded quickly and graciously. Thankfully, everything checked out. But their care and concern for us reflected the whole feel of the camp. The Centrikid staff strikes that amazing balance of both keeping a tight schedule and of caring for all the campers. Consequently, I think Centrikid is amazing!

IMG_3582Though us pastors and chaperones appreciate Lifeway’s ability to deftly handle the logistical challenges of caring for several hundred kids, our campers go to camp for camp. And Centrikid Camp rocks camp. Centrikid offers a great assortment of track times ranging from muddy slip-and-slides to fingernail painting. The kids also have a blast playing games they selected. But, camp has only just begun.

Our campers highlight this year was the grand, final game, Organized Mass Chaos (OMC). Our kids loved entering the OMC playing field, racing through the pool noodle tunnel and screaming out their team cheer for the whole world to hear. When the game started, our kids went crazy smashing water balloons, making silly face, putting shaving cream on people, and holding impromptu dance parties as the valiantly pursued victory. For the kids of FBCE, OMC is the game of all games! Hence, they and I think Centrikid is amazing!

We veered over to the Shocco Springs location this year. We loved our new digs. The rooms were a definite upgrade. We all loved having a private bathroom. The amenities Shocco Springs were great.  The camp offered bazooka ball (a twist on paint ball, kayaking, and a blob on their lake. We quickly burned through our free time barely finding time for the all-important trip to the snack shop. Thus, I think Centrikid is amazing.

IMG_3436Most importantly, we loved Centrikid’s commitment to the Gospel. From the opening celebration to the closing celebration, the Gospel remained at the forefront of camp. The kids went to four different Bible studies throughout the weekend. They heard the gospel connected back to their track time games during water breaks. And, they heard the gospel clearly articulated from the stage by Pastor David. Our chaperones were also resonated with Pastor David when he illustrated God’s free gift of salvation by giving away candy to one blessed camper. Because the Gospel ebbed and flowed throughout every aspect of camp, the chaperones and I had multiple opportunities to talk with our campers about the gospel. For this reason most of all, I think Centrikid is amazing.

We loved Centrikid this year and cannot wait to go back next year! The only question remaining is: “Are you coming?”

Can We Be Friends With The World?

blog-on-paslm-2Have you ever thought about why people do not like Christians? Why do coworkers think we are stupid for believing that Jesus is real? Why do people attack church as being lame, boring, or a crutch? Why does everyone from our neighbor to our favorite teacher think so little of the Bible, God, salvation?

And the bigger question is, “Are they right?” Most of our non-Christian friends seem happier and appear to more accepted by their neighbors and family. Being a Christian often seems to bring more troubles and problems than being a nice gal or a moral guy. Will embracing the world’s morality bring us peace?

No, We should serve the Lord our God for he is the one true God. This is the message of Psalm 2. And this is the message that we must act upon.

And if we hope to serve the Lord, we must first stop fearing the world. Psalm 2:1-3 asks:

Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves and the rules take counsel together against the Lord and his anointed, saying, “let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.

With his questions, the Psalmist is touching on the futility, the pointlessness of the world’s wisdom. No man is able to lead another man to heaven. We cannot find salvation on our therapist’s couch. We cannot eradicate sin, sorrow, and disasters through government planning. The grand hope of new ideas that have inspired everyone from Plato to President Trump always fail. Humanity excels at handing out awards but fails to truly change the human condition. The poor remain, the lack of education remains, and the violence remains.

These men and women are set on a vain path because they are ultimately fighting against God. They are trying to break their connection to God and against his anointed one, the Messiah – Jesus. They are like a dog on a leash desperate to be free of all of God’s demands. They reject God’s decree that they need Jesus to save them from their sins and busily get together for the purpose of gnawing through their chain which connects them to the God of the universe.

All the secular ideas about how to end war, about how to overcome poverty, and about how to gain peace, all have one purpose. They are designed to free humanity from God.

Humans want the freedom to determine their gender. They want to be able to decide what is right and wrong; they want to be able to choose which companies are bad and which companies are evil. The world comes together to achieve greatness so that it does not have to worship God. The people of the wolrd want to boast, “God we fixed all our problems. We did it without you. We do not have to obey you. We do not need you. We have done it all. We have loosed the bounds. We are free.”

The people of this world are not seeking after God. The philosophies, the ideas that get tossed around Facebook, that we hear in the school yard, and write about in our class notebooks are not innocent. They are not morally neutral. They are opposed to God. The most humanitarian effort, the greatest attempt designed to help others through providing food for refugees, through giving clothes to the homeless, and through free physchological evaluations when devoid of the gospel is nothing more than the people of this world shaking their first at God. All these attempts to achieve goodness are nothign more than humanity proclaiming to God we can do life, “My way.”

While we can and should join with worldly people who seek to help the hurting, we must never forget that they are opposed to God. We must never buy into their philosophies. We must not embrace their view of God, humanity, or creation. We can agree with their conclusion that the frog appears to be green but we cannot agree with worldly philosophy that declares man to come from the frog. We can agree with the doctor who declares that addiction enlarges certain aspects of our brain. But we cannot agree with the worldview that says addiction can be only overcome by legalist set of rules. We must affirm the gospel worldview.

All who do not affirm that God is ruler of the universe, work against him. If we are going to follow the God of the universe, we cannot fear the world. They will disagree with us about our greatness need. They will answer the question of “What is our purpose; and, how do we know it?” very differently from us. And they will not be open to divine insight.

They are taking counseling together far away from God’s throne room. They are opposed to the thoughts of God. We must realize that the world is against all who seek after God.

We cannot be friends with this world if we are friends with God.

Who have you befriended?
